So in the writing of this blog, I've been trying to review beers that are new to me rather than rehashing my old faves with rave reviews. This, however, is not a new beer to me. It's in fact one of my all time favorite beers, Rogue Double Dead Guy Ale. I was at Lone Hill Liquors and I got myself a bottle of 2008 edition...so about a year old. I thought I'd check it out and see how it mellowed, so I plopped down my $10.
Pours looking a dark golden color as normal. It has almost no hop aroma, but a nice malty scent to it.
Tastes, well, not all that different from what I've expected from DDG. It's big, starts caramel-y and then has a bitter finish that slowly rides in and reminds you that a big beer just passed through. It's rich and flavorful, but pretty mellow for a beer with such a high IBU/ABV.Sitting for a year has not hurt this guy a bit, but the warmth that's hitting my cheeks is letting me know its still a big beer, and I should not get distracted.
This guy is an excellent beer after a year of aging, although I can't say it did a huge amount for it flavorwise either. I'd say you're safe to drink this one fresh, guys.
